Created by reader Kris Schenck, this sandwich combo was a runner-up in one of our weeknight challenges. Hanger steak has all the flavor of skirt steak, but it's more tender, which makes it better for sandwiches.

Ingredients

  • soy sauce
  • vegetable oil
  • garlic cloves, finely chopped, divided
  • tablespoon packed dark brown sugar
  • tablespoon plus 1 tsp. chili powder
  • teaspoons ground cumin
  • teaspoon cayenne
  • tablespoons lime juice, divided
  • pound hanger steak
  • mayonnaise
  • tablespoon finely chopped cilantro
  • teaspoon finely chopped green onion
  • jalapeño chile, seeded and finely chopped
  • large red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and quartered
  • ounces ciabatta bread , halved horizontally
  • lightly packed arugula
  • medium red onion, thinly sliced
